Skillet Rosemary Rolls

Before I talk about these amazing and fun rolls to make, I want to briefly comment on the Haiti earthquake tragedy.  I have seen so many blogs doing wonderful things to raise money for the relief effort.  Such as: bloggers pledging money per comment and then giving the money to different charities.  It's heartbreaking to watch the tv coverage.  I personally live on a very tight budget but I feel that every little bit helps.  My grocery store, Publix, is providing a way for customers to help and donate to the American Red Cross.  You can add to your grocery bill and on your receipt it says Haiti Relief Fund.  I just round up my bill.  It's not much but multiply this by many, many donations and it can make a difference.  In just the first 4 days of this effort, Publix has donated 2.3 million to the American Red Cross.  So, no matter how big or small, we can all help during this natural disaster.

Now, about these rolls.  They are easy and soooooo good!  The recipe comes from Pioneer Woman's blog.  You use frozen dinner rolls (I use Bridgford Parker House rolls), some butter ( I use unsalted), rosemary and sea salt all baked in a cast iron skillet.  I can fit 8 rolls in my skillet.  This means 2 rolls each for my family of four.  Thank goodness this is all my skillet can fit because these rolls are so addicting we could all eat many more than 2 each!

Enjoy!

Mom's Cooking Club Lesson:  These frozen dinner rolls need to thaw and rise which takes several hours.  I'll take them out in the morning, place in my oiled cast iron skillet, cover with a towel and they will be ready for the oven at dinnertime.

Great idea on the donation. I am making these rolls! I have some frozen dough in the freezer.

As you mentioned Jamie a small amount by many would go far to help in the aid of the people of Haiti. I cannot forget to mention these rolls though what an excellent idea!!!

That is a great idea on how to help no matter what you can afford.

Those rolls look so addictive! Wonder... do you have to use a cast iron skillet? I don't have one... maybe I need to put one on my wish list so I can make these?

Patsy,
I'm sure any ovenproof skillet would work but I love my cast iron skillet. I would highly recommend you get one. I use it to make corn bread, saute fish, potatoes and of course these rolls. I'm finding more and more things to make in my cast iron skillet.

I had some rolls like these in a restaurant once. Just after I placed an order for a ribeye steak and macaroni and cheese (excessive much?) the waiter brought a small iron skillet of bread to our table. They were warm, soft dinner rolls with the most delectable rosemary flavor and I couldn’t control myself. Within seconds, the rolls were gone and I was frantically scanning the restaurant for our waiter so I could request some more, which I eventually did.

Three iron skillets of bread later, I was wishing I could cancel the steak and noodles. I’d eaten so many rolls, I smelled like rosemary for days. People kept stopping me, asking which Aveda product I was wearing.

I duplicated these rolls the other day using—brace yourselves—basic frozen dinner rolls. The star of this show is really the rosemary (and another surprise ingredient; stay tuned) and I actually find the texture and flavor of rolls from frozen dough to be not bad at all! But if you’re a from scratch purist, you can substitute your own homemade dough or use the dough from my cinnamon rolls. Anything will do!
